Is Chernobyl radiation really causing negative individual and population-level effects on barn swallows?

چکیده

Møller and co-workers (2007) observe an “elevated frequency of abnormalities in barn swallows at Chernobyl” and “can think of no alternative explanations other than exposure to radiation that can have caused the observed patterns”. However, an obvious alternative hypothesis (e.g. Pikulik and Plenin, 1994) is that apparent impacts on birds may be due to ecosystem changes resulting from the abandonment of contaminated land. In this and previous papers, Møller and coworkers downplay key limitations, namely:

Is Chernobyl radiation really causing negative individual and population-level effects on barn swallows?

Elevated frequency of abnormalities in barn swallows from Chernobyl

Ever since the Chernobyl accident in 1986, that contaminated vast areas in surrounding countries with radiation, abnormalities and birth defects have been reported in human populations. Recently, several studies suggested that the elevated frequency of such abnormalities can be attributed to poverty and stress in affected human populations. Here, we present long-term results for a free-living p...

Increased oxidative stress in barn swallows from the Chernobyl region.

The Chernobyl nuclear accident produced the largest unintended release of radionuclides in history, with dramatic consequences for humans and other organisms. Exposure to ionizing radiation is known to reduce circulating and stored levels of specific antioxidants in birds and humans, thus potentially increasing oxidative stress. However, overall effects of radioactive exposure on oxidative stat...

DNA damage in barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) from the Chernobyl region detected by use of the comet assay.

We investigated levels of DNA damage in blood cells of barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) inhabiting the Chernobyl region to evaluate whether chronic exposure to low-level radioactive contamination continues to induce genetic damage in free-living populations of animals. Blood samples were obtained from barn swallows collected at sites with different background levels of radiation, including a rel...

Chernobyl as a population sink for barn swallows: tracking dispersal using stable-isotope profiles.

Stable-isotope profiles of feathers can reveal the location or habitat used by individual birds during the molting period. Heterogeneity in isotope profiles will reflect heterogeneity in molt locations, but also heterogeneity in breeding locations, because spatial heterogeneity in molt locations will be congruent with spatial heterogeneity in breeding locations in species with high connectivity...
